Specialist Teacher Pools for Remote Schools

Previous Updates

November 2007

Twelve specialist teacher positions have been filled, comprising three at Ramingining, one each at Milingimbi, Numbulwar and Angurugu, and two each at Borroloola, Yuendumu and Umbakumba.

Years 7-10 students are receiving face-to-face secondary provision using the Northern Territory Curriculum Framework. A combination of Stage One and Two NTCE units are being offered in collaboration with the NT Open Education Centre and delivered onsite with NTOEC support.

June 2007

Nine specialist teacher positions have been filled, comprising two at Ramingining, one each at Gapuwiyak, Milingimbi and Numbulwar, and two each at Borroloola and Yuendumu.

Three new specialist teachers commenced in 2007 at Gapuwiyak and Milingimbi in the Ramingining Collaborative Trial Site, and at Numbulwar in the Ngukurr Collaborative Trial Site. A combination of Stage One and Two NTCE units are being offered at these schools, co-delivered by teachers onsite and the NT Open Education Centre.

December 2006

The Specialist Teachers for Remote Communities and Collaborative Trial Sites projects are being rolled out concurrently. A full secondary program commenced at the start of 2006 at Raminginging CEC with a further three sites identified for development at Yuendumu, Borroloola and Ngukurr. Each of the schools in these communities will be clustered with neighbouring schools to provide secondary education to nearby smaller communities.

A number of specialist secondary teachers have been allocated, and grants provided to the four sites to enhance their ICT capacity. The roll out of secondary education to the four sites, combined with the new distance education service, the middle schools approach, and the community engagement program will see a significant leap forward for education in remote communities.

August 2006

To support the introduction and development of the Collaborative Trial Sites program, two new specialist secondary teachers were appointed to Ramingining for Semester 1, 2006, and one will commence at Yuendumu at the start of Semester 2 2006. Two new positions have been established at Borroloola CEC. There are a further 11 secondary teachers at the four sites who are temporarily employed under this program to support the introduction and development of programs for the on-site delivery of secondary education.

Allocation of new specialist teachers will occur as the other sites commence activities, and as the successful recruitment of suitably qualified secondary teachers and staff accommodation allows.

January 2006

There is a strong relationship between this project and the Collaborative Trial Sites project and as a consequence, they are being prepared jointly. Nonetheless, it has been necessary to develop the Collaborative Trials Site project first in order to identify how the specialist teachers might best support delivery of secondary education in those trial sites, as well as other remote schools.

The first two pool teacher positions have been allocated to Ramingining CEC to support the introduction and development of programs for the on-site delivery of secondary education. These appointments are initially for six months.
