Indigenous Students' Leadership and Mentorship Program (ISLMP)
Current Update
The number of applications we received for the 2008 ISLMP was larger than expected, and as a result the selection process was lengthy and involved. With so many outstanding applications, the panel found it difficult to select the new participants. The students who were selected displayed a strong commitment to learning and potential for achievement with valuable skills to offer his/her community.
The current cohort of students recently attended a highly successful Induction Day, Award Ceremony and Leadership Camp. Students completed workshops on team building, communication skills, and values education and met Indigenous role models. All students are currently identifying mentors and are completing the necessary paperwork and requirements.
The program is now accredited as two Stage One units to count toward each student’s NTCE pattern.

Comments provided by previous ISLMP participants :
"I gained a lot of skills and learnt how to become a great leader within my school and my community"
"The mentoring support has been excellent. I have developed a professional relationship as well as developing a great friendship. I have been given an excessive amount of my mentor's time both in and outside school. I have gone from having a mentor, to a good friend that I can talk to about anything."
"I have become a better person and learnt about the person I am."
"I can speak in front of a crowd and I've learnt that there is a leader in everyone."
"I feel stronger and more confident." |
Overview
This initiative aims to improve leadership opportunities
for Indigenous secondary students enrolled in government
schools by engaging local organisations and the broader
community in supporting leadership opportunities focused
on improved educational outcomes and pathways. Twenty
five students will be awarded a position on the program
in 2005. From 2007, 50 Indigenous secondary
students will be supported and maintained by the program
each year. A Coordinator's position has been funded
to develop and manage the project.
