MOVING THE
TERRITORY AHEAD

Phase One Workshops

Tennant Creek– 18 June 2004

Outcomes

Individual Participant Comments

All young people in the Northern Territory - and especially Indigenous young people in remote communities - have access to quality secondary education

It's getting harder and harder to find teachers

The rapid centralisation of resources has taken away our control, and our needs are not being met

We are becoming accountability mad

What happened to a home grown profession?

LATIS has been a disaster

Don't think the group school model was ever thought through

If we have group schools a span of 12-13 is impossible, 6 is manageable

Schools should get the resources to ensure that children who remain in the communities get the education they need

All young people have quality teaching and learning that meets their learning needs at the various stages of their development

Where did the proposal for closing NTOEC come from?

How can we broaden the range of subjects we offer without NTOEC?

Most of us deal with a wide range of ability in our student group and yet we still manage to meet individual needs - that is the real challenge of secondary schools

Our students love high school, they like having a range of teachers and appreciate being able to negotiate with their teachers

All young people have access to support for their social and emotional needs when they need it

We have no access to social and emotional support for our students

Social and emotional support is a higher priority for urban schools. At small schools like ours we have little need

People from the community could be house parents at schools that have a hostel or boarding house

More young people stay on at school longer and more complete Year 12

Many Indigenous students are not ready to learn at 15-16 but at 20-22 they are. The system does not have the flexibility to allow them back

All young people are well prepared for their future pathways when they leave school

Year 10 is a realistic goal for us

The Northern Territory community has confidence in the quality of its secondary education

We appreciate being given the opportunity to respond to the Report

Other Comments:

The management and the logistics base on which the education system works is failing

It's easy to get the pedagogy right, but the management system outside the school is bad

Management is productivity averse and doesn't understand itself

My school costs $30,000 per student. For extra funds I have to go to charity

DEET's communications are poor

DEET is an operation of clerks and not an operation of teachers
