MOVING THE
TERRITORY AHEAD

Phase One Workshops

Palmerston – 19 May 2004

Outcomes

Individual Participant Comments

All young people in the Northern Territory – and especially Indigenous young people in remote communities – have access to quality secondary education

Need better incentives and professional development for teachers.

Teachers and pedagogy will make a difference to the system – they will do the most to lift the bar.

All young people have quality teaching and learning that meets their learning needs at the various stages of their development

Will Year 7 – 9 (middle years) and Years 10 – 12 (senior years) be established as separate entities or will they be housed in the same school? There are implications on the division of resources.

Not convinced of the rationale behind moving Year 7s to high school – is this a numbers game?

Currently Years 7 – 10 are compulsory years – a restructure will mean removing Year 10s from the current framework.

Need to protect the curriculum framework which goes to the end of Year 10.

All young people have access to support for their social and emotional needs when they need it

Are gifted students included as students with ‘special needs’?

Primary school children need support for social and emotional needs. Their needs will be different from those of Year 7 students but just as important.

General support for more support staff for schools. However, more infrastructure is needed to support them.

Need to find ways for schools to access support staff and special education staff.

More young people stay on at school longer and more complete Year 12

All young people are well prepared for their future pathways when they leave school

Pathways for students are important but needs to take into account earlier years.

The Northern Territory community has confidence in the quality of its secondary education

Improvements can be made to the collection of data but how is it to be done?

A Quality Services Agency is not really necessary.

Other Comments:

The report treats secondary education in isolation and there are impacts on primary education. The transition between primary and secondary education is important.

Need more time for discussion before forming a view.
